MY WEEKS -- June 29-July 30
The Legislature is in recess until the beginning of August. During the interim, I’ve been holding community meetings in Senate District 15 and working on legislative issues.
• I convened a community workshop on fire safety at the Redwood Estate’s Pavilion to inform residents about what they can do to protect their home and how a new program to clear deadwood, funded by a grant I helped obtained, can reduce fire danger along Highway 17. Participants included CalFire, the FireSafe Council, Santa Clara County Fire Dept., the Santa Clara Valley Water District, and Caltrans.
• Since 2008, I’ve been holding community coffees, talking to people face-to-face about state-related issues, such as college tuition, homelessness, the rising cost of health coverage, and more. They tell me what’s on their minds and it helps examine policies and laws in a different light. My latest community coffee was held in late July in San Jose.
• I met with constituents and representatives for organizations, including:
The California Transportation Commission; the Office of the Governor; Campbell Vice Mayor Liz Gibbons; San Jose Water Company; the Bay Area Caucus Transportation Committee; Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen; Santa Clara Valley Water District Chief Interim Executive Officer Norma Camacho; Santa Clara Valley Water District Director Gary Kremin; Los Gatos Town Council Member Rob Rennie; League of California Cities Peninsula Division; Legislative Analyst’s Office; League of California Cities; California State Department of Finance.
• I took part in a Wake Up to Aging: Policy & Aging Compendium panel in San Jose, taking part in a dialogue about issues confronting California's burgeoning population of seniors. Demographers project that one in five Californians in 2030 will be over 65.
