John Vasconcellos -- California's Warrior for Social Justice

May 24, 2014

SAN JOSE -- Senator Jim Beall, D-San Jose, released the following statement on the death of John Vasconcellos, who served 30 years in the State Assembly and eight years in the State Senate representing the people of Santa Clara County:

“In many ways, John Vasoncellos acted as the social conscience of the California Legislature for nearly 40 years. He was an outspoken advocate for children and the disadvantaged. He was a warrior for social justice.

“His work was grounded in the belief that California’s prosperity was inextricably tied to the promise that everyone must have an equal opportunity to grasp success. Making that ideal a reality was reflected in his legislation.

“He was one of a kind and I will always be proud to point out that John Vasconcellos was from San Jose.’’
