NAMI California Names Beall as Legislator of the Year
BURLINGAME -- Senator Jim Beall was honored today as Legislator of the Year by National Alliance of Mental Illness California at its annual conference.
Beall, the chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Mental Health, was commended by NAMI California for his work to improve mental illness response training provided to law enforcement and for working to bolster mental health parity.
“I am especially grateful to be presented with this award because NAMI has been such an important partner and advocate for many of my bills – legislation to ensure mental health parity in California, expand mental health training for police, and make treatment more accessible,’’ Beall said, after the ceremony. “Together we have helped raise the Legislature’s awareness of mental illness and the need for mental health services.’’
In a letter notifying Beall that he had been selected as Legislator of the Year, NAMI California Executive Director Jessica Cruz told him, “Once again, we appreciate your dedication to mental health and are honored to be able to present you with this award.’’
