Senator Jim Beall’s Reaction to the 2017-2018 Budget

June 15, 2017

SACRAMENTO --  Senator Jim Beall, the chairman of the Senate Transportation and Housing Committee, issues this statement regarding the new $125 billion general fund state budget approved Thursday by the Legislature:

“This budget goes a long way in securing California’s future by investing our schools and universities. We’ve made a forceful statement about the important role education plays in the lives of our young people by guaranteeing every qualified in-state student will be admitted to a California State University campus. We have also increased per pupil spending to a record $11,000 per year by adding $3 billion more to K-14 education.

“Because the Legislature passed SB 1, the budget will fast-track $2.8 billion to fix our crumbling roads and cut commute times. This investment in the transportation infrastructure will create thousands of jobs and keep the economy rolling. I am also pleased the budget shores up the Medi-Cal system while pumping $1.8 billion into the emergency rainy day fund.’’
