SAVING $1 MILLION FOR SANTA CLARA COUNTY

With the passage of my legislation, SB 347, Santa Clara County taxpayers will now keep $1 million that was destined to be paid to the state. The bill was signed this month by Governor Brown.

Those savings can be re-invested in services for run-away and homeless youth to keep them safe.

A SOLUTION TO POLLUTION

Help take care of a precious resource by joining volunteers to clean up Los Gatos Creek on Saturday, Aug. 24, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., at Campbell Park, located at Campbell and Gilman avenues. Registration begins at 8:45 a.m.

THE BUDGET
The state’s new $96.3 billion spending budget approved by the Legislature this month reflects a cautious approach after years of cuts. It devotes new revenue – generated by voter-approved tax increases and a bump in business tax receipts – primarily to education and to paying down the debt accumulated during the recession.

PROTECTING THE YOUNG AND OLD

A key component of two of my key bills this year is about protecting our most vulnerable people - children, the elderly and those with disabilities - from being exploited. The ideas for the bills, SB 156 and SB 326, originated from our community.

EDUCATION

California's public schools are at a crossroads. After four years of cuts, our schools have lost $20 billion in funding and 38,000 full-time teachers while student enrollment tops more than 6 million.

What can we do to improve our embattled schools and how can California restore revenues that that have been slashed?
