Assembly Bill 346, legislation that requires alcopops - sugary, liquor-laced drinks that mimic the taste and appearance of energy drinks and sodas - to carry prominent labels that say they contain alcohol, cleared a major hurdle Monday by gaining Senate approval by a 27-to-12 vote.

A second bill, AB 1826, correcting an inequity in court fees, is also signed into law

Two bills introduced by Assembly Member Jim Beall, Jr. were signed into law by the Governor last week, including one that helps property owners pay for the installation of solar panels with the assistance of local government financing. The urgency bill went into affect immediately with the Governor’s signature.

Assembly Bill 433 puts more food on the table for 86,000 Californians

Legislation by Assembly Member Jim Beall Jr. aimed at putting more food in the mouths of California’s poor who have been pummeled by rising unemployment and soaring food prices was approved Thursday by a 44-29 vote in the Assembly and now moves to the Governor’s desk.

Assembly Bill 1887 mandates health insurers expand coverage for mental illnesses and substance abuse

Landmark legislation to bring help to Californians who are denied treatment for an addiction or mental health illness by their health insurance was passed by the Assembly today.

Assemblymember Beall, D-San Jose, will be honored by the California Youth Connection for his work in helping foster care youth and raising awareness about foster care-related issues. He will be recognized by the organization and presented with a plaque on Monday, Jan. 26, 8:30 a.m., at the State Capitol building.
“This is a wonderful honor, especially because it is determined by the young people in CYC,’’ Beall said. “Together, we can work to help California’s foster care youth.’’

MEET ME

In case  you missed my earlier District Office Open House, you can meet me at the Willow Glen Coffee Roasting Co., 1383 Lincoln Avenue, San Jose, on Saturday, Jan. 29, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. where I will be meeting with constituents, listening to their concerns, and answering questions about pressing state issues.

I plan to hold a meeting in the community every month this year.
