SACRAMENTO -- Homeowners facing foreclosure may once again be able to rely on the protection of the Homeowner Bill of Rights to stay in their homes after Senator Jim Beall’s SB 818 was approved by a 33-0 vote in the Senate today. The bill will now be sent to the Governor for his consideration.

SACRAMENTO – Senator Jim Beall’s legislation, SB 1053, to resolve any confusion about how long a victim of childhood sexual abuse has to file a claim against a public entity and seek justice through the civil courts, was ratified today by Governor Brown.

“Since many abusers manage to escape prosecution,’’ Beall said, “the ability of victims to file a civil case should be protected and serve as a deterrent to the perpetuation of abuse by those who would shield the abusers from justice.’’

SACRAMENTO – When a child moves through the placement process in dependency court, Court Appointed Special Advocates stand by the child to protect their best interests and provide recommendations that best serve the child’s needs.

Yet these advocates are not required to participate in one of the most crucial junctures in the placement process -- family team meetings that include the child and parents, child welfare personnel as well as counselors, extended family, friends, and others.

SACRAMENTO – Action to bolster mental health services in schools and help students was approved by the Senate today. By a 32-0 vote, Senator Jim Beall’s legislation to fund children’s crisis mental health services at equal levels to adult services, advanced to the Assembly for consideration.

SACRAMENTO -- Senator Jim Beall’s bill to increase the effectiveness of mental health and addiction supportive services that also reduces state costs was approved today by the Senate. Senate Bill 906 passed on a unanimous vote.

SB 906 proposes to certify qualified peer providers -- people with lived experiences as family members, clients, or caretakers of individuals recovering from addiction or mental illness – to provide support services that help their clients complete their treatments or therapies.

SACRAMENTO – Sen. Jim Beall’s legislation to restore crucial mortgage and foreclosure protections that expired at the start of this year was passed today by the Senate and now moves to the Assembly.

Senate Bill 818 proposes to renew key consumer safeguards in the California Homeowner’s Bill of Rights, protections that were adopted in the aftermath of the 2008 recession that contributed to 800,000 homes entering foreclosure. The bill gave borrowers immediate help and protection in the event of inaction by their lenders.
