Jim Beall’s proposed $3 billion Affordable Housing Bond, funding to help solve California’s critical housing shortage, spur job creation, and leverage federal tax incentives to increase the bond’s impact, was approved today by the Senate Transportation and Housing Committee by a 9 to 1 vote.

“I believe many working families who have been hit hard by the high cost of housing in California because of the lack of affordable house share in my disappointment of the Governor’s veto of SB 377. This veto is a major blow to affordable housing construction in our state.

SACRAMENTO – Senator Jim Beall’s bills to ramp up the oversight of powerful psychotropic drugs dispensed to youths in foster care were ratified today by the Governor.

Senate Bills 319 and 484 are aimed at reducing the over reliance of mind-altering medications to control the behaviors of foster youth. About 25 percent of children in the state’s foster care system are given powerful drugs that can have long-lasting side effects such as depression and obesity. Over half of the children in foster care group homes are administered the drugs.

SACRAMENTO – Legislation by Senator Jim Beall that focuses on improving the ability of peace officers to safely deal with people who have mental illnesses was signed into law by Governor Brown today. Senate Bills 11 and 29 become effective on Jan. 1, 2016.

SACRAMENTO – For years, the state returned a lower percentage of property tax dollars to four Santa Clara County cities because of a discrepancy in the law.
With the Legislature’s passage of Senate Bill 107 that contains a provision sought by Senator Jim Beall, those cities can see that discrepancy eliminated with the stroke of the Governor’s pen.
