Speaker Bass Appoints Beall To Chair The Assembly Select Committee On Foster Care
Assembly Member Jim Beall, Jr. has been appointed as the new chair of the Assembly Select Committee on Foster Care.
Assembly Speaker Karen Bass made the announcement on Thursday. Beall, D-San Jose, replaces Bass, who had served as the chair since the select committee’s inception in 2005. Both Bass and Beall have had a long, abiding interest in improving the foster care system that protects California’s neglected and abused children.
“I’ve entrusted Assembly Member Beall with this post because of his long history of advocating on behalf of foster children in Santa Clara County as a supervisor.’’ Speaker Bass said.
“He has initiated a number of successful local programs that should be implemented as best practices throughout the state. I look forward to his leadership of this important committee and to continue to working on permanent funding for foster care issues.’’
“I want to thank the Speaker for placing her trust in me,’’ Beall said. “Speaker Bass’s unprecedented work on the Select Committee has helped improve the lives of thousands of foster children. We both know that more work is needed to be done and I’m honored to assume this responsibility.’’
Beall, D-San Jose, begins as Chair at the Select Committee’s scheduled July 31 meeting. The Select Committee on Foster Care was created to review, debate, and coordinate California’s public policies regarding the state child welfare system.
Beall also chairs the Assembly Human Services Committee and the Select Committee on Alcohol and Drug Abuse.
