EdSource: Gov. Gavin Newsom signs law mandating fentanyl safety plans in schools
Gov. Gavin Newsom signed “‘Melanie’s Law” Friday mandating schools have prevention and response resources for fentanyl overdoses, KRON4 reported.
Now, schools will have to instruct school employees on opioid prevention and lifesaving response techniques through a comprehensive school safety plan. The law also creates a framework to raise awareness of growing risks and ensures schools have the necessary resources to respond to poisoning and overdoses.
“When we wrote this bill one year ago, we knew that it would be our most significant piece of legislation in 2023. (Senate Bill) 10 was our top priority because fentanyl has left a trail of devastation across California, and our bill establishes a series of concrete solutions to protect young people,” state Sen. Dave Cortese, D-San Jose, said in a statement Friday about the bill he originated.
