California Senate Proposal to Honor the More Than 65,000 Certified School Bus Drivers Who Transport More than 1 Million Students Annually

SACRAMENTO, CA — California State Senator Dave Cortese (D–San José) announced the introduction of Senate Concurrent Resolution 157 (SCR 157), recognizing and honoring school bus drivers across California for their critical role in safely transporting students and supporting families every day. My Senate colleagues approved my SCR 157 which now heads to the Assembly for further consideration.

“School bus drivers are unsung heroes in our education system,” said Senator Cortese. “Every morning and afternoon, they are entrusted with the safety of our children—and they deliver with professionalism, care, and an unwavering commitment to our communities.”

Across California, approximately 65,000 certified school bus drivers transport more than 1 million students each year, traveling hundreds of millions of miles to ensure students arrive safely to and from school. These drivers are often the first and last point of contact in a student’s school day, playing a vital role in student safety, attendance, and overall well-being.

SCR 157 is proudly sponsored by the California Association of School Transportation Officials (CASTO), a leading voice for student transportation professionals across the state.

“On behalf of CASTO, we sincerely thank the Senate for recognizing California’s school bus drivers and the essential role they play in the safety and success of our students,” said Chrissie Stevenson, CASTO President. “Every day, these professionals go beyond transportation—they support students, model patience, and ensure safe passage through every mile and challenge. Your recognition today affirms the value of their service and the impact they have across our communities.”

“From rural communities to urban centers, school bus drivers connect students to opportunity,” Cortese added. “They are essential to our public education system—especially for working families who rely on safe, dependable transportation.”

Senator Cortese emphasizes the importance of accelerating the transition to clean, zero-emission electric school buses to reduce pollution, improve air quality around schools, and protect student health.

“As we honor these drivers, we must also invest in the future of student transportation,” Cortese said. “Clean electric buses are not just an environmental priority—they are a public health imperative for our kids and our communities.”
