California Senate Recognizes Education & Sharing Day

Senator Cortese (D-Silicon Valley) and Senator Wiener (D-San Francisco) have joint authored Senate Resolution 77 to proclaim Tuesday, April 12, 2022, as “Education and Sharing Day” in the State of California.

Education and Sharing Day is about creating conversations. It's about the conversations we have with our children around the dinner table, the conversations we have with our students in the classrooms and the conversations we have day in and day out that can have an impact on the hearts and minds of our young ones,” says Senator Cortese.

"It is our responsibility to share the knowledge that has been passed down to us onto future generations,” says Senator Wiener. “The Day of Education and Sharing reminds us that teaching and learning should be celebrated every day, and that the pursuit of education is a lifelong journey."

Over the last four decades, the US Congress has set aside “Education and Sharing Day,” and it is proclaimed annually by presiding US presidents from both parties on the birthday of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, known as the Rebbe, who was one of the leading global advocates for the advancement of education. While he concentrated his efforts on rebuilding and energizing the global Jewish community after the devastation of the Holocaust, he paid great attention to the needs of all humanity. April 12, 2022 will mark 120 years since the Rebbe’s birth. For more than 40 years, the President of the United States has recognized and honored the Rebbe’s vision each year on that day by proclaiming it “Education and Sharing Day, U.S.A.”

Rabbi Mendel Weinfeld, Founder and Director of The Chabad House in San Jose says, “This day provides Americans the opportunity to pause and recognize our responsibility to ensure that our young people have the foundation necessary to lead lives rich in purpose and fulfillment. The Rebbe taught that in truth every person is an educator, and we must be mindful of our ability to impact the lives of others.”

In 1974, the Rebbe introduced the “charity” campaign, a grassroots campaign to train us all to become “givers”. To honor this campaign, Senate Offices will be provided charity boxes to be encouraged to give to charity every day.
