Cortese’s SB 1250 - Road and Highway Safety: Wildlife
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
Every year across California, thousands of drivers experience dangerous wildlife-vehicle collisions on our highways and local roadways. Researchers indicate that there are more than 7,000 reported wildlife-vehicle collisions annually in California involving deer and other large animals— creating serious public safety risks and costly damage for motorists.
That is why I introduced Senate Bill 1250 to prioritize roadway safety by preventing wildlife-vehicle collisions. SB 1250 has been approved by the Senate and is now referred to the Assembly for further consideration.
SB 1250 will help reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions by integrating wildlife crossings into highway planning and infrastructure improvements throughout California. By creating safer pathways for animals to cross roads and highways, we can better protect drivers, preserve wildlife habitats, and improve roadway safety for everyone.
I understand the importance of balancing environmental stewardship with public safety. Our state is home to valuable open spaces and wildlife corridors that are increasingly impacted by expanding transportation infrastructure. Investing in smart solutions like wildlife crossings can save lives, reduce accidents, and help prevent habitat fragmentation for species that are vital to California’s ecosystems.
