Former Mexican-American Raiders Quarterback and Two Times Super Bowl Winner Jim Plunkett to be Honored with California Senate Resolution

SACRAMENTO, CA — California State Senator Dave Cortese (D–San José) has introduced Senate Resolution 93 (SR 93) honoring San José native and two-time Super Bowl champion Jim Plunkett on his induction into the inaugural class of the NFL Alumni Hispanic Hall of Fame. You may read the resolution of SR 93 here

Born in San José to Mexican American and Native American parents, Plunkett overcame significant economic hardship to become one of football’s most accomplished quarterbacks. A Heisman Trophy winner at Stanford University and the first Hispanic player selected No. 1 overall in the NFL Draft, he went on to lead the Las Vegas Raiders franchise to two Super Bowl victories, earning Super Bowl XV MVP honors and making history as the first quarterback who is Hispanic to win a Super Bowl.

“Jim Plunkett’s story is one of perseverance, excellence, and barrier-breaking achievement,” said Senator Cortese. “With SR 93, we not only celebrate his well-deserved induction into the Inaugural Hispanic Hall of Fame, but we are also working to elevate his legacy and ensure he receives full recognition with induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.”

“To be recognized by the California State Senate is incredibly humbling. California has always been home to me and has shaped who I am both as a player and as a person. I’m deeply grateful to Senator Cortese and his team for this honor and for taking the time to celebrate my journey in such a meaningful way,” said Jim Plunkett former Raiders Quarterback.

Plunkett’s career spanned 17 seasons, including stints with the Patriots, 49ers, and Raiders, culminating in two championships and a lasting legacy as one of the game’s most impactful leaders. He has previously been inducted into multiple halls of fame, including the College Football Hall of Fame and the California Sports Hall of Fame.

Senator Cortese emphasized that SR 93 serves as a call to action to ensure Plunkett’s contributions to the sport are fully recognized at the highest level.

A special senate floor presentation is scheduled for April 20 during the legislative session. Additional information will be provided as we get closer to the date.
