Sen. Cortese's Statement on SB 1162 - Employers' Compliance with Skilled and Trained Workforce Standards - Advances to Governor's Desk

SAN JOSE, CA – Senator Dave Cortese (D-San Jose) issued the following statement regarding his Senate Bill 1162 (SB 1162) advancing to the Governor’s desk for signing and adoption.

“My Senate Bill 1162 aims to protect good-paying, living wage, middle-class jobs. This is important given the rising cost of living and as more and more Californians are pushed out of the middle-class and neighborhoods they have come to call home,” said Senator Cortese. “Ultimately, my SB 1162 ensures employers comply with existing skilled and trained workforce standards, and pay workers higher wages commensurate with their training.”

SB 1162 would require employers to verify a worker’s identification, and their corresponding completion of a state-certified apprenticeship program. Employers would then be required to submit a verification report to the Labor-Management Cooperation Committees (LMCC’s) to confirm their compliance with the law.  This ensures employers are not engaging in wage suppression and are indeed hiring an unskilled and untrained workforce.
