Sen. Cortese's Statement on SB 956 - Modernizing K-12 School Facilities - Signed Into Law by Governor Newsom

SAN JOSE, CA – Senator Dave Cortese (D-San Jose) issued the following statement on his Senate Bill 956 (SB 956) being signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom.

“K-12 school districts across California will now be able to save millions of taxpayers’ dollars when renovating or constructing new on-campus facilities now that my Senate Bill 956 has been signed into law. Ultimately, my SB 956 aims to improve outcomes for students by providing them with a safe, environmentally sustainable, and positive learning environment,” said Senator Cortese. “The signing of my SB 956 into law comes at a time in which California voters will get to decide on whether to approve a $10 billion bond to pay for repairs and upgrades at thousands of K-12 schools across the state. If approved by voters, my SB 956 will be well-equipped to leverage the bond dollars raised in a financially responsible manner.”

Senate Bill 956 will enable K-12 school districts to expedite construction of new on-campus facilities, generate creative solutions to distinct infrastructure issues, and encourage greater collaboration between architects, engineers, and contractors through a concurrent, single contract saving schools millions of dollars. With a state schools facility bond going on the ballot in November, this will likely facilitate billions in school modernization.
