Senator Cortese’s Bill to Address the Exploitation of an Individual’s Name, Voice or Likeness for Commercial Purposes Passes the Assembly Judiciary Committee
SACRAMENTO – Senator Dave Cortese’s (D-Silicon Valley) bill providing swift legal remedies for individuals who have had their privacy rights violated by the unauthorized use of their name, voice, signature, photograph or likeness for commercial purposes today was unanimously passed by the state Assembly Judiciary Committee. Senate Bill 683 now goes to the state Assembly floor for a vote.
The bill is intended to address and prevent exploitation, particularly in situations where individuals’ personal information or images are used without their consent.
SB 683 is designed to expediate the removal of the unauthorized materials while legal proceedings are ongoing. Specifically it allows individuals to seek the immediate removal of the materials within two business days.
“SB 683 strengthens existing privacy protections by encouraging individuals to seek a temporary restraining order for the removal of their name, voice, signature, photograph, or likeness if it’s being used without their consent,” said Senator Dave Cortese.
