Senator Dave Cortese Instrumental in Getting Money for Encampment Clean-Ups On Caltrans Property in San Jose

SACRAMENTO –  In a move to clean-up encampments on Caltrans property on or near freeway onramps and other dangerous areas, California State Senator Dave Cortese (D-Silicon Valley) recently collaborated with San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan, Caltrans Director Tony Tavares and California’s Secretary of Transportation Toks Omishakin on getting money from the state to help finance the clean-up work.

As a result, the Senator was able to secure $400,000 in state funds, which gives the city the authority to clean up the encampments on Caltrans property and expedites the process. The cleanups cannot happen without permission from Caltrans.

Senator Cortese said he also made it clear that Caltrans policies requiring the placement of the unhoused living in these areas is still in force.
