Senator Dave Cortese Introduces Proposal Calling for Greater Safety Regulations of Tabletop Fire Pits to Prevent Further Burn Injury Victims
SACRAMENTO, CA — California State Senator Dave Cortese today announced the introduction of a Senate Bill 870 (SB 870) that would prohibit the sale of tabletop fire pits that don’t adhere to top fire-safety regulations following a growing number of severe fires that have resulted in serious burn injuries, and in some cases, deaths:
“Tabletop fire pits are being marketed as family-friendly, harmless, decorative products ideal for roasting marshmallows indoors, but the reality is far more dangerous,” said Senator Cortese. “These products have been linked to sudden flare-ups and explosive fires that can cause life-altering burn injuries in seconds. Californians should not be put at risk by products that lack adequate safety standards.”
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued multiple safety alerts and recalls involving several tabletop fire pit brands after receiving numerous reports of severe injuries and fatalities. Despite these warnings, many of these products remain widely available to consumers.
Senator Cortese’s proposal would prohibit the sale of tabletop liquid-fuel fire pits unless the product is able to qualify as a “compliant device.” The bill grants authority to the California State Fire Marshall (CSFM) and the California Attorney General’s Office to inspect retail premises, warehouses, and online listings, to issue stop-sale orders, and to require manufacturers and retails to submit compliance documentation, along with penalties for noncompliance.
“We have a responsibility to act when dangerous products threaten public safety,” Cortese added. “Greater regulation is about prevention—protecting families, preventing devastating injuries, and ensuring manufacturers are held accountable for putting safety first.”
The Senator emphasized that the proposal reflects California’s commitment to consumer protection and fire safety, particularly as the state continues to confront heightened fire risks.
