Senator Dave Cortese's Statement on the Budget Act of 2024

I'm proud to announce that we have reached an agreement with Governor Newsom on a budget that will strengthen California. The Budget Act of 2024 is the result of months of hard work and extensive public input. We have managed to close a budget shortfall of over $45 billion, ensuring a balanced budget through the 2025-26 fiscal year. This agreement not only safeguards our progress, core programs, and education but also prepares us for the future by introducing vital reforms to strengthen our fiscal resilience.

I'm particularly proud of the responsible measures at the core of this budget. As a member of the Education Budget Subcommittee, I feel our ability to protect education funding and key programs in the face of a $45 billion budget shortfall is remarkable. The Budget Act of 2024 allows us to continue making significant investments in education, healthcare, and public safety. As a lifelong advocate for investing in housing, healthcare, and public safety, I am pleased this budget protects the progress we have made in those many areas.

With this budget, California has created a model for states facing difficult fiscal years.
