Sen. Cortese's Response to his SB 554 - The Survivor's Protection Act - Being Signed Into Law
SAN JOSE, CA – Senator Dave Cortese issued the following statement regarding his Senate Bill 554 (SB 554) – the Survivor’s Protection Act – being signed into law by Governor Newsom.
“SB 554 upholds that justice knows no borders nor should protection for survivors of domestic violence and harassment. Survivors will now be able to restore a sense of peace and safety back into their lives, which was stolen from them,” said Senator Cortese. “Ultimately, SB 554 will provide a critically needed lifeline and legal shield to help break the cycle of abuse, harm, and instead foster a sense of hope for the future free from fear.”
“My sexual assault left me with the terrifying realization that the mechanisms to protect me were failing survivors across America. The Survivor’s Protection Act is not just about expanding justice – it is about saving lives – and that became reality for Californians today. This bill confronts a justice system that has for too long been a barrier for victims rather than a source for protection,” said Nazeehah Khan, survivor and Founder of Restraining Orders Without Borders. “We are ecstatic to welcome Governor Newsom's support which will make California the 16th state with the most comprehensive restraining order access laws in the nation. Senator Cortese's fearless advocacy for survivors was instrumental in this win and we are indebted to him and his staff for their commitment to this bill."
SB 554 will empower victims of domestic violence and harassment by allowing them to request protective orders in a California court regardless of their in-state or county residency status.
