Homeless High School Students With the Gumption to Go to College Would Get Financial Assistance Under Senator Cortese’s Bill Passed by the Assembly Higher Education Committee
SACRAMENTO - Senator Dave Cortese’s (D-Silicon Valley) Senate Bill 685, designed to provide critical financial support to students who experienced homelessness in high school and need assistance to get a college education, today was passed by the Assembly Higher Education Committee.
The pilot program would cover the full cost of attendance for eligible students at four California State University (CSU) campuses. The CSU chancellor will choose the schools from four regions of the state including Northern California, Central California, Southern California, and the Southern Bay Area.
“These students have the ambition to go to college and they need a financial leg-up to do it. California is facing a growing homelessness issue with students. Statistics from the California Department of Education show more than 90,000 high school students statewide were identified as homeless and 24,000 of them are high school seniors,” said Senator Cortese.
