Senator Dave Cortese Names Silicon Valley Youth Climate Action (SVYCA) as Senate District 15’s 2026 Nonprofit of the Year

SAN JOSE, CA — California State Senator Dave Cortese (D-San Jose) today announced the selection of Silicon Valley Youth Climate Action (SVYCA) as Senate District 15’s 2026 Nonprofit of the Year in recognition of the organization’s leadership in youth climate advocacy, environmental education, and community engagement throughout Santa Clara County. The announcement is part of a larger, statewide effort recognizing a nonprofit organization per Senate District. Awardees are being recognized at a luncheon reception in Sacramento on Wednesday, May 20th, 2026.

SVYCA has become a leading voice in empowering young people to take action on climate change, educate their peers, and advocate for a more sustainable future. Through outreach, organizing, and environmental awareness initiatives, the organization has inspired a new generation of leaders committed to protecting the planet and advancing climate solutions.

“As someone who has been a climate justice advocate for decades, I deeply appreciate the passion and commitment these young leaders bring to the fight against climate change,” said Senator Cortese. “SVYCA is not only educating young people about the environmental challenges we face, but also empowering them to become advocates and changemakers in the communities they represent.”

Cortese reflected on his own longstanding commitment to environmental stewardship dating back to his time serving on the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors and earlier, where he established the Kids Climate Club to engage and educate young people about environmental stewardship and climate awareness. Additionally, his work with The Tech Museum and its Climate Quest, an arcade-style game that puts individuals in charge of taking climate action through everyday choices about food, water, wildlife, and things that one purchases.

“I have always believed that educating young people about climate change is one of the most important investments we can make for our children’s future,” Cortese said. “Seeing organizations like SVYCA continue that mission gives me tremendous hope. Their work demonstrates that young people are not waiting for change — they are leading it.”

Senator Cortese noted that youth-led climate advocacy plays an essential role in shaping California’s environmental future and building stronger, more informed communities.

“The students are extremely honored to be recognized by State Senator Dave Cortese and appreciate his leadership in supporting youth empowerment around climate action,” said Ze-Kun Li, SVYCA’s Executive Director. “This will continue to fuel our work training and mentoring the next generation of youth to be life-long climate leaders and pushing for sustainable climate solutions.”

“As a long time contributor and witness to SVYCA's growth as a regional force for youth climate action, it brings me tremendous pride for Senator Cortese to also recognize SVYCA's impact through his Nonprofit of the Year Award” said Katherine Park, Youth Director at SVYCA.

“At a time when the impacts of climate change are increasingly visible in our daily lives, organizations like SVYCA are helping ensure that the next generation is informed, engaged, and ready to lead,” Cortese added. “I am proud to recognize SVYCA as Senate District 15’s 2026 Nonprofit of the Year.”
