State Announces Plans for Eviction Moratorium and Rent Relief
The State Legislature today announced a “three-party deal” to provide relief and protections to tenants and small landlords in California. AB 832, which will be voted on by both the Senate and Assembly on Monday June 28th, appropriates over $5 billion dollars in federal rental assistance and extends California’s rental assistance program and eviction moratorium, set in place through SB 91 and AB 3088, until September 30th of 2021.
Senator Dave Cortese (D-San Jose), Chair of the Senate Labor Committee, issued the following statement on the rental assistance agreement:
“As we are just beginning to come out of this pandemic and reopen our economy, it is important to recognize that so many families are still experiencing massive hardships and loss of income due to COVID-19. The extension of this vital program and protections therein will assist both renters and small property owners who are struggling to ensure we can restore our economy and rental market for the long term,” said Senator Dave Cortese (D-San Jose).
AB 832 extends the current protections afforded to tenants, landlords, and homeowners under SB 91 and AB 3088 until September 30, 2021, including allowing tenants (who provide a COVID-19 hardship declaration to their landlord) to pay 25% of their rent until the end of the moratorium.
